Contest Rules

In order to acces to the registration form and to the contest program, thank you to agree to the contest rules at the end of the page.

1. Organization and Location

 

The association Arpoador and the French town of Carry-Le-Rouet organize an International Guitar Festival from Thursday, May 16 to Sunday, May 19, 2019. The International Guitar Contest Arpoador is part of this event.

 

The youth contest (Categories 1, 2, and 3) will take place at the Municipal Music School of Carry-Le-Rouet (Théâtre de verdure, Le Jas Vieux). Category 4, Excellence Category, the prize-giving ceremony (on Saturday, May 18), as well as the evening concerts will take place at the Fernandel Concert Hall (Espace Fernandel, avenue Aristide Briand). All competitors must register at the Music School.

 

2. Eligibility and Categories

 

The contest is open to guitarists of all nationalities. The following categories are proposed:

 

  • Category 1: candidates born after December 31st, 2007
  • Category 2: candidates born after December 31st, 2004,
  • Category 3: candidates born after December 31st, 2001,
  • Category 4: candidates born after December 31st, 1998,
  • Excellence Category: no age limit

A participant can compete in maximum two categories.

 

The entire contest is open to the public at no charge.

 

3. Program and Requirements

 

All pieces must be performed from memory. Each competitor must submit the original and two copies of the free-choice pieces. Participants in Category 1, 2, 3, and 4 must perform one of the required pieces (the list will be available on the website) and one free-choice piece not exceeding:

 

  • 3 minutes for Category 1
  • 4 minutes for Category 2
  • 5 minutes for Category 3
  • 7 minutes for Category 4

 

The list of required pieces will be available as of early January on the website www.arpoador.fr and on the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Arpoadorguitare .

 

For the Excellence Category:

 

  • 1st Round on Thursday, May 16th, 2019, as of 9am; each competitor will perform a program of his/her choice of a duration between 8 and 12 minutes.
  • Semi-Final on Friday, May 17th, 2019, as of 10am: each competitor will perform a program of his/her choice of a duration between 13 and 17 minutes, different from the 1st Round.
  • Final on Saturday, May 18th, 2019 at 3pm: each competitor will perform a program of 25 to 35 minutes, which must include one piece by Sergio Assad. Works from the 1st Round may be repeated.

 

4. Prizes

 

All participants will be rewarded (strings, CD, T-shirt, etc.), if they have performed and are personally present at the prize-giving ceremony.

The first three guitarists of each category will receive the following prizes:

 

Category 1 1st Prize 100 euros

                2nd Prize  50 euros

                3rd Prize  25 euros

 

Category 2 1st Prize 200 euros

                   2nd Prize 100 euros

                   3rd Prize  50 euros

 

Category 3 1st Prize 300 euros

                   2nd Prize 150 euros

                   3rd Prize  75 euros

 

Category 4 1st Prize 500 euros plus a first part of a concert at the following Guitar Festival

                    2nd Prize 250 euros

                    3rd Prize 125 euros

 

Excellence Category

                  1st Prize 3000 euros plus several concerts (Paris International Guitar Festival, International Guitar Festival of Carry-le-Rouet)

                  2nd Prize 1500 euros

                  3rd Prize 1000 euros

 

A prize of 500 euros is rewarded for the best performance of a work by Sergio Assad. This prize can also be won by a participant of Category 4.

 

In case of ex aequo, the winners will share the prizes.

6. Registration Fees

 

  • Category 1: 20 euros
  • Category 2: 25 euros
  • Category 3: 30 euros
  • Category 4: 35 euros
  • Excellence Category: 60 euros

 

Registration fees include the annual membership fee of the association Arpoador.

They are not refundable (except in the unlikely case of a cancellation of the entire event).

 

7. Registration Deadline

 

Registration is only possible until May 7th, 2019.

 

8. Application

 

In order to be eligible an application must contain the following elements:

  • The duly completed registration form
  • The titles of chosen work
  • A copy of the participant’s ID card or passport
  • A CV for guitarists competing in the Excellence Category
  • Payment of the registration fee either by check to Arpoador (to be sent to Arpoador,
  • 1 avenue du Général Leclerc, 13620 Carry-Le-Rouet, France) or by money transfer to the account of Arpoador:

  • The duly completed membership form for the Arpoador Association (the membership fee is already included in the registration fee)
  • The duly completed accommodation form plus a check or proof of money transfer of 15€ of reservation fee (if applicable: subject to availability – see article 9).

 

 

9. Transport and Accommodation

 

Transport and accommodation are at the expense of the participant.

 

Transport - How to reach Carry-le-Rouet:

 

By train: There is a direct train connection from Marseille (St. Charles) to Carry-le-Rouet until 7:30pm. For arrivals after 7:30pm a pick-up service, ideally from Aix-en-Provence (Gare TGV) can be organized by volunteers.

 

By plane: the closest airport is Marseille Provence. The participants can be picked up by volunteers at the airport. Alternatively, buses to Marseille (St. Charles) are available.

 

Accommodation:

Volunteer families of Carry-le-Rouet and surrounding villages offer to provide accommodation for participants.

Guitarists accommodated by host families shall:

- Communicate their place and date of arrival and departure at least one week before the start of the Festival.

- Respect the rhythm of life of their host families

 

The families offer accommodation and breakfast. All other meals are at the expense of the participant. This said, the organizer will provide (light) meals during the four days of the festival.

Generally, host families do not accommodate accompanying persons (family, partner, professor…).

 

We guarantee to provide accommodation in host families for the first 20 registered candidates who ask to be accommodated. For all other candidates, accommodation in host families is not guaranteed, but depends on the number of volunteer host families. Thus, we recommend registering as early as possible. The duration of accommodation is restricted to the duration of the Festival.

 

A list of hotels in Carry-le-Rouet will be available on the website.

 

 

10.  Lottery

 

For the Excellence Category a public lottery will be organized on May 15th at 7pm at the Municipal Musical School of Carry-le-Rouet in order to determine the performance order.

 

Participation in this meeting is mandatory. If a competitor should not be able to attend this meeting due to circumstances beyond his/her control, (s)he must inform the organizer (before the start of the meeting).

 

The results of the First Round and the performance order of the Semi-Finals will be announced in the afternoon of Day 1. Twelve (12) competitors will advance to the Semi-Final; four (4) to the Final.

 

 

11.  Judging

 

Judicaël Perroy is the Artistic Director of the Festival and will be present during the contest.

 

The jury for Category 4 and Excellence Category is made up of Tania Chagnot, Marcin Dylla, Michel Grizard, Rémy Jousselme, Florian Larousse, Natalia Lipnitskaya, Christophe Louboutin, and Tristan Manoukian; for categories 1, 2, and 3 the jury members are Agnès Condamin, Laurence Mauffroy, Vincent Maurice, Karine Oskian, and Yves Scotto. The Association reserves the right to change jury members if necessary.

 

All decisions by the judges are final. A judge cannot vote for a competitor if he/she is or has been his/her student. The jury can decide not to award all prizes. A judge present for a round or a category of the contest may not be replaced during this session. The jury can stop a guitarist from performing if he/she exceeds the imposed time limit.

 

 

12.  Cancellation

 

The Arpoador association reserves the right to cancel the event in case of a low number of participants. In this case the registration fees will be reimbursed.

 

 

13.  Others

 

By registering and participating in this contest, the participant accepts to respect all rules.

In case of dispute or litigation only the French text is legally relevant.
